Do Sticker Charts Work for Every Child?

Have you ever been advised by a teacher or specialist to try a sticker chart to motivate your child? Did it work? If your answer is yes, that’s fantastic! But if your answer is no, you’re not alone.

Every child is unique, with their own set of strengths and challenges. Some kids naturally excel in areas like sports, singing, reading, or math. Others shine in emotional flexibility, problem-solving, making friends, or understanding personal space.

For children who struggle with flexibility, emotional regulation, or decision-making, sticker charts often fall short. Why?

Sticker charts are designed to do two things:

  1. Teach children what’s considered “right” and “wrong” behavior.

  2. Motivate them externally by punishing undesired behaviors and rewarding the behaviors adults prefer.

While this approach works for some, it doesn’t address the underlying skills some kids need to thrive. Instead, it simply tries to control behavior without teaching why or how to improve.

If sticker charts or reward-punishment systems aren’t working for your child, it’s okay—you’re not alone. My kids don’t thrive with them either. But does this mean our kids aren’t motivated or don’t understand the difference between “right” and “wrong”? Absolutely not.

In fact, our kids do know what’s expected of them, and they want to do well. They just need different strategies and tools—ones that help them manage “big feelings,” build the skills they lack, choose the best solutions to problems, and learn how to stay flexible, even when it’s hard.
